1. Classic Tailoring with a Modern Twist

Classic tailoring never goes out of style. However, modern Fall styles show a shift towards modern elements incorporated into traditional suit looks. Expect to see slim-fitting silhouettes with slightly shorter jacket lengths. This contemporary take on the classic suit adds a touch of modernity and versatility to your suit look, giving your suit jacket the sport coat vibe when necessary. This will also include a push for more classic and often vintage accessories, such as timepieces from the 80’s and 90’s, and the return of the french cuff shirt with interesting cuff links as a fashion statement.

2. Earthy Tones and Rich Hues

This fall, embrace the warm and inviting colors of nature with earthy tones and rich hues. Shades like deep burgundy, olive green, and burnt orange will dominate men's suit collections. These colors not only exude elegance but also complement the autumnal atmosphere perfectly. Green was the suiting color of the year in 2023 (at least from our experience) and that will continue into the fall, as F/W ‘24 collections are still coming out from Loro Piana, Huddersfield, and other fabrics mills.

3. Textured Fabrics

Along with color, texture is key when it comes to fall suiting. Look for suits crafted from textured fabrics such as tweed, flannel, or even corduroy. These materials add depth and visual interest to your ensemble while keeping you warm during the cooler months. Experiment with different textures to create a unique and stylish look. Tweed is always a safe and timeless bet, as are flannel fabrics. Corduroy made a ripple in last year’s F/W collections, but we anticipate a lot more of it this year, both in suiting and shirting.

4. Layering with Knitwear

Layering is an essential technique for fall fashion, and suits are no exception. Instead of exclusively wearing traditional dress shirts, opt to add lightweight knitwear such as a fine-gauge sweater or a turtleneck. Layer it under your suit jacket for a contemporary and cozy touch. This combination not only adds warmth but also adds depth to your outfit. This also allows you to play with patterns and colors that you might not otherwise get to include in a tailored look. Not judging if you did own a mustard-colored dress shirt, but you’re more likely to have a sweater that shade. Use it!

5. Statement Patterns and Prints

Ties, by and large, are out when it comes to suit looks as a fashion decision. If you’re looking for tailored outfits that don’t have to be worn in-office, ditch the plain jane dress shirts and embrace the bold patterns underneath your classic fall suits. As for the suits themselves, expect to see checks, plaids/tartans, and bold stripes taking center stage this season. These eye-catching designs add personality to your outfit while maintaining a polished and refined look. Remember to keep your ensemble balanced. If the shirt speaks volumes, let the suit whisper. If the suit screams style, let the shirt speak softly to complement it.

6. Oversized Outerwear

This one almost pains me to say, as a stickler for properly-fitted garments, but… Embrace the trend of oversized pieces this fall. I don’t personally love the oversized suit look, where the shoulders are slouching halfway down your bicep, but if you’re in a market that appreciates that look, go for it! (If you’re in DC, probably don’t.) Current trends are pushing the boundaries of traditional tailoring by introducing loose-fitting overcoats with wide lapels and lots of flair. Pair one large piece with an otherwise-fitted outfit and sleek accessories to balance out the volume and create a stylish statement look.

Fall style is all about embracing classic tailoring with a modern twist. Experiment with earthy tones, textured fabrics, and layered knitwear to create a stylish and sophisticated look. Don't be afraid to try louder suits or incorporate statement patterns and prints for a fashion-forward approach. Elevate your style this season and make a lasting impression wherever you go. And remember, when you’re looking for a completely custom suit option with more ways to make it your own than anyone else, Capitol Hill Clothiers has your back.
